‘EXPRESSING BLACK LOVE’
Part 2: In the Midst of it All
It’s funny how life seems to continuously happen around you and it’s not until you stop and pay attention do you realize that if you participate it would be a lot more fun, worthwhile even. (smile)
I’m sure the above statement will yield a lot of ‘Amens’ ‘Preach’ and ‘You said something then,’ reactions. All because I know each of us have been in a situation where we have overlooked what was right in front of us. Which leads me to “Expressing Black Love” Part 2: In the Midst of it All.
Ironically, the story of The Broughton’s starts similar to my parents. Imagine that, some 30 years later there is still a thing as LOVE at first sight. Sitting in a classroom at Alabama A&M University Brandon Broughton looked up just in time to see my best friend Shannon walk in and at that moment he knew she was the one. Funny thing is Shannon didn’t really notice him, she was moving to fast in the wrong direction that she didn’t pay attention to what was right in front of her. So, Brandon admired from afar.
Then a few months later Shannon and I were at one of her brother’s football games and out of ALL the people there she spotted Brandon. Finally taking the time to see what was right in front of her the whole time, she called him right then and there. I’m sure Brandon was shocked seeing as Shannon had never called him before even though she had the number for months. He played it cool but knew he would not let this opportunity to pursue the woman of his dreams pass him by. Within a week Brandon had been shopping with us, met all the brothers and sisters (there’s 12 in all), met Shannon’s mom, and took a road trip to Nashville with us for one of my many Birthday celebrations. Ok, so it may not have been a week but it did seem to happen so fast. (smile) A few months past and I never saw Shannon happier and the love that Brandon has for her could be seen by everyone they encountered.
Then the proposal and a year later the day that Brandon knew would happen the moment Shannon walked into that classroom became a reality. Now, even though they have been married for only 3 years they are a perfect current example of ‘Real Love’…that can be seen by strangers…’Real Love’…when society is stripped away…’Real Love’…when you see the soul of a person…’Real Love’…when you wake up everyday and completely love all over again…’Real Love.’
So, you see the examples that I have surrounding me of ‘Forever Love’ inspire me and keep that desire in my heart that ‘Black Love’ still exist. For all of you that have found your ‘Forever Love’ congratulations. For those that are still patiently waiting, these two stories give us hope, so hold on, your ‘Forever Love’ is out there. Just make sure you are not missing what’s right in front of you. (smile)
Lesson Learned: “Forever Love does still exist”
