San Bernardino Arroyo Valley High School track and basketball star Ashley Brown has already made herself known as one of the top underclassmen runners in California nearly winning individual league titles in the 200 and 400 meters as a freshman last season attracting attention from national track powerhouse University of Oregon
What is your motivation for success?
For basketball, it’s just being part of a team. For track it’s to go to the University of Oregon.
How do you balance school and sports?
I balance school work and sports by doing my school work right after school. Sports help me keep my grades up.
What made you choose to be an athlete?
Seeing my mother’s kids not doing anything made me want to be the only kid out of my mother’s children that came to be something in life.
What are your biggest achievements so far?
I improved my 400 meter run, almost won the league championship, and I manage to shoot more.
What do you do to prepare for track and basketball?
Well before track practice I run a mile and before basketball I just practice with my friends.
What sacrifices have you had to make to be successful?
I had to give up partying, boyfriends, and just take care of my body.
Who has helped you improve your skills?
As far as track I have a friend who runs track in college who gives me advice and in basketball Coach (Micheal) Anderson.
What are your goals for your track and basketball career?
My goal for track is to get a scholarship to University of Oregon and basketball is there just to keep me in shape for track.
How do you plan on accomplishing your goal?
I plan on accomplishing my goal by training hard and practicing every chance I get, doing my best at every race so scouts can see me.
Who do you look up to as a role model?
I look up to Christian Brennan because she’s a top winner at Oregon and she ran two of the same events as me with the time of 23.43 seconds in the 200 and 52.12 in the 400 meters. Also, as a 15 year old she claimed the bronze medal in the 400 at the 2011 Canadian National Championships.
